What is Necessary

Last week I took what I call a Day off with God or a DOWG day. It’s a time when I intentionally go away somewhere and spend time in prayer, listening to worship music and Scripture reading. One of my mentors introduced me to this spiritual habit early in my ministry career. I must admit, though, this can be difficult for me. Why? I can be task orientated. My mind wanders to the to-do list waiting for me, the anxious thoughts I have for my family or those under my care as a family pastor. However, when I spend the day with my Savior, He reminds me exactly who’s in charge of those lists and worries. Spoiler alert. It's not me. As Christ-followers, we understand that Jesus is the King of kings and Lord of lords (Revelation 19:16). Yet, we fret about things that are not necessary instead of what is essential - being at the feet of Jesus.

In Luke’s gospel, we find an example of two people (Martha and Mary) who love their Lord. Yet, one allows the busyness of life to interfere with what is necessary, which is listening to the instructions of her Savior (Luke 10:38-42). Martha forgot what is always essential and the better choice – being at the feet of Jesus (v.41). This is the posture Mary took – one of humility and submission (v. 39). This is vital in our spiritual formation, the willingness to surrender our day and admit how much we need Him.
