The Impossible

Forgive me; I will quote another classic movie, Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back. After witnessing his X-Wing [ship] fall to the bottom of the swamp floor, one of the main characters Luke, whines (he does that a lot) – "We will never get it out now." Calmly, another main character, Yoda, a Jedi Master (i.e., he's powerful), replies, "Always with you what cannot be done." After an attempt, Luke fails to raise his ship using the Force. In despair, Luke argues, "You ask the impossible." How many of you can relate? Not to the Jedi training. I am referring to allowing circumstances to interfere with our faith in a higher power. Regarding the movie, it is a fictional power - the Force.

For Christians – it's Jesus. In his gospel, John describes a scene where the impossible needs to happen. Approximately 15,000 people began following Jesus due to the miracles He was doing. Jesus, noticing this large group, asked Phillip (his disciple) where they would buy bread so the people may eat (John 6:6). It was a pop quiz on faith. He looked at the situation from a worldly perspective (v.7). Our Lord taking charge gave everyone a lesson on faith by multiplying a child's donated lunch - I love that. Phillip only saw the impossible; Jesus, however, saw an opportunity to give thanks and allow His Father to do the impossible. So let us give thanks and see what God can do in moments of what we think cannot be done.
