Pursuit of Truth

My parents grew up under the catholic tradition; they taught my sister and me what it means to be part of this denomination. Growing up in a catholic church, I did appreciate the value of believing in God and the comfort of belonging to a spiritual community. However, you may have heard me say this before – I grew up knowing God but didn’t know God. Why? Short answer, I didn’t know Jesus. The relationship with Him was lacking; therefore, I didn’t truly understand the significance of committing my life to our Lord. Looking back, though, I realize it was more than not just knowing Jesus and the knowledge of Him. Scripture was available to me; I attended classes that taught about Him. Nevertheless, I didn’t ask questions or pursue the truth of Jesus.

In Matthew’s account, because of an interpretation of an astrological occurrence, the Maji went to seek out the child born to be the King of the Jews (Matthew 2:1-2). They sought Truth and knowledge. Interestingly, King Herod’s scribes knew of this birth and His significance, yet they did not bother to seek the promised Savior (Matthew 2:5-6). The wise men went to the toddler Jesus, saw for themselves, and worshiped Him (Matthew 2:10-11). Christians understand they are witnessing Truth incarnate, the living Word of God (John 1:1-18; 14:6). My friends continue to seek the knowledge and Truth of Jesus and pray for an encounter with Him (Psalm 145:18, Colossian 3:1-4). Jesus is God with us (Matthew 1:23).
