Invite

After ten years of not attending church, I remember returning to church for myself, my wife, and, at that time, our two boys. Honestly, I wasn't sure what to expect from the church. I wanted a place for my kids to learn about God that differed from my experience growing up in the Catholic church. Our return to church didn't start with someone telling me all the wrong things I was doing in my life (there were many) or any judgment. Instead, the journey began with a kind lady inviting me to a church service—several times. Not in a way that was condescending, but gently reminding me of a community of people who would enjoy having my family join their family. I remember her smile, gentleness, and genuine care for my soul. All that from an invite? For me, yes.

When I read the story of Zacchaeus in Luke's gospel, I love this verse about our short friend – "He was trying to see who Jesus was "..." (Luke 19:3). This man was seeking something more, and he figured it started with Jesus. So, what did our Lord do? He invited Himself to Zacchaeus' house. More importantly, he requested this sinner to spend time with Him – it was necessary (v.5). It began with Jesus accepting this man, then came obedience (vv.8-9). I can relate to this story in a way. No, not because I'm short. My understanding of repentance began with an invitation to church. Then came obedience to Jesus.
