For You
Christmas. Are you ready? Hearing that question is usually for the same reason – the status of your gift purchase. Did you forget anyone? An equal amount of presents for each child, oh how significant is that detail. I remember as a young adult walking the length of the mall on Christmas Eve (yep, I was that guy) looking for Christmas presents. Thank you, Lord, for my wife, who does not tolerate such foolishness. As we prepare for the celebration of Christmas, I am in awe of Luke's message told by the angel of the Lord concerning the birth of Jesus. The advent of God's Son is both a global difference-maker and a personal message to everyone who will ever live in His creation.
The angel first announces to the shepherds that he brings good news "of great joy that will be for all people" (Luke 2:10b, ESV). A proclamation of God's love for His creation (Genesis 1-2, John 3:16). Then, the angel begins to individualize his message. The angel asserts, "For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger" (Luke 2:11-12, ESV). Notice he says unto you, a sign for you, making it clear this birth is a personal, life-changing event. This Christmas, celebrate the message sent by God to you through the birth of His Son, Jesus.
